‘ There is only one word that can serve as a practical rule for our whole life – reciprocity.’
Confucius, philosopher

The Principle of ‘Ayni’ and Despachos Ceremonies

The whole shamanic tradition of the Q’ero nation, the descendants of the Incas whose shamanic tradition is a pre-Inca tradition, is based on the principle or law of ayni. Ayni means reciprocity and a balance between the energy life’s flow of giving and receiving. The principle of ayni means that we should give and show gratitude first, before we ask for something, so we may receive.
Like all shamans, the Laikas and Pacos (Q’ero shamans) envision the natural world as a creation, an expression and a part of The Divine. Their shamanic training and initiations are based on knowing, being well acquainted with and connected to all the natural and elemental forces and spirits, Mother Earth, the Universe, the world of spirit, healer and shaman lineage, spiritual helpers (guides, guardians, masters, teachers, ancestors, enlightened beings, archangels and angels), and The Divine. They consider themselves as instruments of The Divine, serving Mother Earth and all her Children – they experience that in Spirit we are all one. They work and live with great humility, respect and gratitude for all the gifts and support we are given by Spirit, Mother Earth and all Creation.

‘ If we have the right intentions, anything is possible.’
Hopi saying

The Q’ero shamans perform Despachos ceremonies in order to heal the Earth and all her Children, or solve problems that individuals or communities have. They bring balance back into their lives. In their ceremonies they adopt an attitude of great humility and strength – they are centered, grounded, aligned and connected to all that exists. They start by giving offerings to Mother Earth, the world of spirit, all their spiritual helpers and allies, and Spirit. Then they open a protective and sacred space which is a safe and holy healing space connecting them deeper with all of Creation. They acknowledge, invite and ask for the support and cooperation of all the directions, elements and archetypes associated with them, that parallel the four fundamental principles of Creation (the four elements, the four forces of physics, the four basis pairs of DNA of all living beings – alphabet that contains all of Creation); of Mother Earth with her different layers, and some of the spirits living inside of her; of the Apus (the mountains’ masculine spirits) and the spirits of the Nustas (the mountains’ feminine side and rivers); of the Sun (whose masculine side is stronger but also has a feminine side); of the Moon (whose feminine side is stronger but also has a masculine side); of The Heavens, the Stars and the Star Nations; of their Ancestors, their shamanic lineage and spiritual helpers; of The Divine and sometimes of the water spirits (rivers, lakes, seas/oceans). During these ceremonies the shamans pray while they make different types of despachos and offerings in accordance with what they are addressing.
